Impact of tariffs tough to avoid for some New Hampshire small businesses

WMUR

Last week, local television station WMUR featured Dancing Lion Chocolate on a piece about how tariffs affect New Hampshire small businesses. (Hint: they do. Not many cacao beans grow in the U.S., most of our spices and professional chocolatier equipment come from Montreal, our packaging is from Nepal, and our amazing compostable couverture bags are only produced in Hong Kong.)

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the United States is the world’s second-largest importer of coffee. In a reflection of how much Americans love chocolate, U.S. businesses import about $5 billion worth of cocoa beans a year, according to the USDA.

ABC

Apparently, the piece syndicated to ABC, so I guess we’re national.

My wife notes “you went on TV looking like that?” What can I say.

USDA: potentially about to disappear, which would be a real pain, since they do a lot of work to support the cacao industry. It would make our business substantially more difficult, and also means some of our friends would be out of jobs.
