You may have seen, you may even have heard about the Great Book Giveaway of 2001. Last Tuesday I purchased the venerable Lee’s Spot Bookstore at 917 Elm Street in Manchester, NH. With books. Can’t bear to throw away books, so I offered them up to all comers for free. People took bags of books. Boxes of books. Loads and loads of books. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Some 10,000 went to the organization GotBooks, who will distribute the to non-profits around New England. Local media picked up on the whole thing–apparently giving away stuff gets attention. WMUR ran a nice spot on Tuesday’s 11PM news and again Wednesday morning, which brought even more folks for books; The Manchester Union Leader published a photo of people carting of away boxes.
The giveaway was a wild success and books are pretty much gone. We began the renovation last week, so… Coming in October, Dancing Lion Chocolate on Elm. I’ll keep you posted.
The gentleman in the photo is Greg Barrett of Kas-Bar Realty, who found this amazing location for me and arranged the deal. Thanks Greg!
