Always looking up which is
easy to do when you spend
your time on the ground.
There's a stall on a street
in Paris that sells wheels
and wheels of freshly-made
nougat, sweet heaven on
Earth, earth. On the
ground.
Criollo cacao grows wild
in the jungle in Belize.
I step over a fallen trunk,
dodge around termites,
unwelcome in an ant-home
on a branch just before
a pod-covered tree, standing,
staring upward, feet firm on
the ground.
I pick bananas from bunches
on the island of Puerto Rico,
muse at pecan trees in
Alabama and Florida. I've
been places, but keep my feet
firmly on the ground.
