Philip reverberated the seat beside me in Bill Temple’s literature class at Orcutt Junior High School (Mr. Temple: larger than life, actor, had met the Shah of Iran. Shah: brutal dictator, dead). Philip (hyperactive (they’d now call it ADHD), Japanese American, fidgety, specialized in getting me into trouble) went by Fig, though I never learned why. Haven’t thought of Fig in forty-something years. Wonder how he’s doing?
